Monterey Plastic Pollution Summit (2016-Present)
Mission Bay Eco Club attended the Monterey Bay Aquarium Plastic Pollution Summit in 2016, 2017, 2018 and will again in 2019. There, we present our projects which includes a 6ft pirate ship made entirely out of discarded single-use plastic found on campus that we build and take up there annually. The information is presented to other like-minded students in which are inspired by the reduction of plastic as well.
In 2016 we also attended the Monterey Bay Aquarium Teen Summit where we met with other schools, learned about their programs for reducing plastic and developed our plan and set our goals for as club that we want to achieve over the next few years. |
Plastic Straw Reduction (2017-Present)
Mission Bay Eco Club is striving to reduce the use of single use straws throughout the Pacific Beach Area in order to help put a stop to ocean pollution as 10 percent of plastics don't make it to landfills. We are specifically targeting restaurants and bars along the Garnet Avenue which is the heart of Pacific Beach that contains all types of businesses. We will be going around presenting information to each business while conducting a survey to see if they are willing to change their policy on using plastic straws.
As we are moving along with this project, we will take our information collected the the 2018 Monterey Bay Aquarium Plastic Pollution summit and present it to other lime-minded students who want to prevent our ocean from being polluted. |

The Straw Project is something we have been working on for about 2 years and continue to. We target specifically Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach where we have walked restaurant to restaurant putting up signs as well as asking them to reduce their plastic straw usage and educate on alternatives.
Utensil reduction (2016-17)
Mission Bay Eco Club is committed to reducing single use plastic. Currently San Diego Unified School District uses utensil packages containing: a non recyclable plastic fork, spoon, and straw and a paper napkin all wrapped in a non-recyclable plastic package. For the last year we have been working with the San Diego School District leaders to reduce single-use plastic. We are excited to announce that Mission Bay High School will serve as a pilot school to test eco-friendly utensils. This project has the potential to keep hundreds of pounds of plastic from entering the landfill and to create a more eco-friendly school district and environment.

Climate Kids (2017- Present)
The Climate Science Alliance is a partnership of organizations and agencies focused on sharing an ecosystem-based approach to safeguard communities and natural resources due to the risk of climate change. Partners join together to share scientific knowledge and resources to find real solutions to overcome the challenges of a rapidly changing climate.
Climate Kids is a series of collaborative community projects that promotes youth engagement in issues surrounding climate change through hands on science, storytelling, and art. Each Climate Kids project brings artists, scientists, and storytellers together in a unified partnership to inspire and educate students. Mission Bay High School students have become ambassadors for this program. The students have gone to Pacific Beach Elementary School to teach science lessons on climate change and plastic in the ocean, in addition they have written and read books to every student on the school campus, grades K-5th. At the end of the six week program, MBHS students participated in a “science night” at the elementary school. The night included hands-on demonstrations with algae, information on plastics and global warming, careers in science, and even live animals (abalone). |
